US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States will impose a 50% tariff on copper imports, a key metal in green energy and other technologies, starting August 1.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said, "I am announcing a 50% tariff on copper, effective August 1, 2025, after receiving a robust national security assessment," likely referring to an investigation conducted by the Department of Commerce earlier this year.
He added, "Copper is the second most used material by the Department of Defense!" He noted that the United States needs the material to manufacture semiconductors, aircraft, ships, munitions, data centers, missile defense systems, and more.
Under the banner of correcting the US trade imbalance, Trump imposed additional tariffs of at least 10% on all imports from the United States in April.
These tariffs included most US imports, including those that could not be produced domestically, but they excluded other goods, most notably gold, copper, oil, and medicines.
