Sampdoria relegated to Serie C for the first time

Sampdoria were relegated to the Italian third division for the first time in their history, following a goalless draw with Juve Stabia on Tuesday in a postponed match from the 34th round of Serie B.

Sampdoria, the 1991 Italian champions and runners-up in the 1992 European Cup, finished the season in 18th place, earning automatic promotion to Serie C, after accumulating 41 points in 38 matches.

Sampdoria has suffered financial problems in recent years, with losses in the 2024 financial year amounting to approximately €40.7 million.

Despite competing in the Serie A play-offs last season, they have been gradually heading towards relegation this season.

The club was close to bankruptcy after its relegation to Serie B in 2023, but current president Matteo Manfredi and former Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani, who later left the club, saved it from bankruptcy.

Singaporean businessman Joseph Tee owns the majority stake in the club, which was founded in 1946.

The club appointed former stars Alberico Evani and Attilio Lombardo as coaches in April in an attempt to avoid relegation, following a busy summer and winter transfer window.

Evani is Sampdoria's fourth coach this season, following former Juventus and Milan stars Andrea Pirlo, Andrea Sottil, and Leonardo Semplici.
