At least 40 members of a self-defense group were killed in an attack on a town in central Nigeria and subsequent clashes on Sunday, local and Red Cross sources told AFP on Tuesday.
Nuruddin Hussein Magaji, head of the Red Cross in Plateau State, told AFP that "hundreds of self-defense group members were trapped" in the town of Kukawa on Sunday.
The attack occurred as men were gathering after clashes that killed 10 militants in the nearby town of Bunion, according to a resident.
Nuruddin Hussein Magaji said, "Initial information from our field team indicates that at least 30 bodies have been taken to a local hospital. Some of the wounded have been taken to a hospital in neighboring Bauchi State," adding that "more bodies may be found in the bush."
Musa Ibrahim, a resident of Bunion, said, "Ten self-defense members have been confirmed dead after bandits attacked our town on Sunday."
For several months, violence has been escalating in Plateau State, which is plagued by sectarian tensions, particularly between settled farmers and nomadic cattle herders, due to conflict over the region's land and resources.
