Trump to Extend TikTok Deadline to Find Non-Chinese Buyer

US President Donald Trump will this week grant TikTok a new 90-day deadline to find a non-Chinese buyer, the White House announced Tuesday.

This will be the third time the deadline has been extended for the app, which is threatened with a ban in the United States.

A federal law requiring TikTok to be sold or banned on national security grounds was scheduled to take effect on the eve of Trump's inauguration in January.

"President Trump will sign an additional executive order this week to keep TikTok running," White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said in a statement.

She noted that Trump has repeatedly said he does not want to shut down TikTok.

She explained that the deadline "will be extended for 90 days, and the administration will work during this period to ensure that this deal is completed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok while ensuring that their data is safe and secure."

The short video-sharing platform, which claims to have approximately 170 million users in the United States, faces the risk of being banned in this country on national security grounds, due to the confidentiality of the data it collects from its users.

Former US President Joe Biden signed a law passed overwhelmingly in Congress in 2024, forcing ByteDance to sell the app under threat of a ban on US soil. It took effect on January 19, the eve of Donald Trump's inauguration.

Upon assuming the presidency on January 20, Trump suspended the law and gave ByteDance a 75-day extension to sell its US operations. This deadline expired on April 5. The deadline has now been postponed to June 19.
