Nintendo hopes the Switch 2 will be as successful as the original.

Video game giant Nintendo is counting on a strong launch for its Switch 2, which launches Thursday and is highly anticipated by gamers despite its high price.

Like the original Switch, the Switch 2 is a hybrid console that can be used on the go or connected to a TV. However, it features a larger screen, eight times more memory, a built-in microphone, and detachable controllers.

Nintendo hopes to emulate the success of the Switch, which was released in March 2017. More than 152 million Switch units have been sold since its launch, making it the third-best-selling console of all time after Sony's PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS. However, after eight years, Switch sales have slowed as users grow tired of waiting for the new console.

The Japanese giant predicted in early May that it would sell 15 million Switch 1 units by March 2026, roughly equivalent to the Switch's sales during its first year on the market, based on massive pre-orders (2.2 million in Japan alone in April).

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa noted that the Switch 2's price is "relatively high" compared to the original console.

The Switch 2 retails for $450, while the Switch launched for approximately $377.
