TikTok's CEO defended the platform's policies on data protection, youth-oriented content and transparency on Friday, citing the platform's "ambition to become one of the most trusted companies in the world," amid threats of a ban in the United States and sanctions in other countries.
"We are doing everything we can to become one of the most trusted companies in the world," Xu Ziqiu said in a speech at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, which brings together 21 countries in Lima.
Regarding transparency, he stressed TikTok's "determination" to "dialogue with various stakeholders to exchange information and dispel their concerns."
Regarding security and data protection, he pointed out that TikTok's leading position, used by more than 1.5 billion people, "gives it the expertise to develop effective solutions," especially since it "collaborates with global experts" in this regard.
Xu Ziqiu said that "the security of users' information is a non-negotiable issue, and puts TikTok at the forefront of innovation."
Referring to protecting young users, he stressed that he feels this responsibility "deeply and personally" as a father of three. He said he was "proud of the safeguards that TikTok has built into its platform," such as restrictions on the platform's availability to those under certain age groups. "We work hard to provide a safe online experience for all our users, by removing all inappropriate content from our platform," he continued, noting that 135 million videos that violated the platform's standards were removed in the past three months.
