Trump receives $16 million in his dispute with CBS News

Paramount, the parent company of CBS News, will pay $16 million to end Donald Trump's lawsuit against the news channel, accusing it of bias in an interview with Kamala Harris.

This amicable settlement, reported by American media on Tuesday, is the latest concession by a major media outlet in the face of attacks by the Republican president.

The channel will avoid a trial following the billionaire's October 2024 complaint, when he was a candidate for the White House. Donald Trump's lawyers had sought $20 billion.

Paramount said in a statement reported by American media that the $16 million will be paid to Donald Trump's future presidential library, not directly to the president.

The media and entertainment group also noted that the agreement did not include any public apology on its part.

During his presidential campaign, Trump sued the popular CBS program "60 Minutes" for allegedly editing a misleading interview with his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris.

Specifically, he accused CBS News of editing a segment of the interview in which the candidate's response to a question about the war between Israel and Hamas was confusing.

The network denied these accusations, explaining that it is common in journalism to select which segments of an interview will be broadcast.

The amicable agreement comes as some senior executives at Paramount believe the dispute with Trump is hindering the group's planned merger with production company Skydance, which will compete with streaming giants.

The legal battle between Trump and CBS News has caused uproar, with "60 Minutes" producer Bill Owens resigning in April, citing a breach of his professional independence.

A month later, CBS News President Wendy McMahon resigned.

Trump, a vocal critic of traditional media outlets, has also launched lawsuits against other news organizations, most notably the Des Moines Register, and forced ABC (the Disney Group) to pay $15 million in defamation damages.
