Trump announces 30% tariffs on Mexico and the European Union starting August 1

US President Donald Trump said Saturday he intends to impose 30 percent tariffs on Mexico and the European Union, adding further pressure to push for agreements in his trade war.

In two separate messages posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the tariffs would take effect on August 1, citing Mexico's role in the flow of drugs into the United States and its trade imbalance with the European Union.

The tariffs exceed the 25 percent tariff Trump imposed on Mexican goods earlier this year, even though Mexican goods entering the country under the Trilateral Trade Agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada are exempt from tariffs.

Canada received a similar message in which Trump set the tariff rate on its goods at 35 percent.

The European Union and dozens of other countries were preparing Wednesday for an increase in US tariffs, currently set at 10 percent, but Trump extended the deadline until August 1, just days before the tariffs were due to take effect.

Since the beginning of the week, Trump has sent letters to more than 20 countries informing them of the new tariffs.
