The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Monday that it remains on alert for the outbreak of the Embox virus, primarily in Africa, and called for "continued international support."
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced in a statement on Monday that "the Embox outbreak continues to constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern."
Until last year, a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) was the highest level for any epidemic under the International Health Regulations (IHR), the legally binding framework for its 196 member states (the 194 WHO Member States, Liechtenstein, and the Vatican). However, amendments adopted by WHO member states in June 2024 introduced a higher level of alert, "Pandemic Emergency."
The decision to maintain the alert for the resurgence of Embox comes after the fourth meeting of the IHR Emergency Committee on June 5.
