Tens of thousands of Paris Saint-Germain fans celebrated their team on the famous Champs-Élysées in the French capital on Sunday, welcoming the team with chants, flags, fireworks, and cheers. The Parisian team won its first Champions League title with a historic 5-0 victory over Inter Milan on Saturday, completing the treble after winning the French league and cup.
The PSG delegation returned from Munich, the scene of the final, at 4:30 p.m. Paris time before the players dispersed onto two buses heading to the Champs-Élysées, where an expected 100,000 crowd was expected.
"We are the champions, here, Paris!" chanted the PSG fans amidst the fireworks in a spectacular celebration.
The team's supporters had begun their celebrations early by watching footage of the final on a giant screen.
"It was amazing yesterday, and I couldn't believe it. We controlled the game, and now we can feel the reality that we are European champions," said 22-year-old student Camille.
As for Abdel Rahman (20 years old), who came from Angers specifically to celebrate the title and has been a Paris Saint-Germain supporter since he was a child, he said, "It's unbelievable. Things are going smoothly and there are no violations."
Abdel Rahman arrived yesterday with some friends and watched the match on TV before celebrating on the Champs-Élysées, before returning on Sunday.
French President Emmanuel Macron later received the team members to congratulate them at the Élysée Palace.
During the reception, the French president said, "You are at the top of Europe. You were hungry and had great desire, and you accomplished the mission."
He continued, "I hope to see you here again next year with a second star on your jersey, because I know you are still hungry for more."
Addressing the Qatari club's president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, he added, "You have always defended this club. The club has gone through periods of happiness and sadness. I thank Qatar, along with you, for never giving up, for your constant investment and your constant belief in it. So, I would like to thank them for this success as shareholders, and thank you as one of the officials."
He explained, "You have made many young people dream and you have given life to this shirt. Always live up to the aspirations you demonstrated yesterday."
In a separate message on his Twitter account, Macron congratulated the team on the victory after the title win: "A glorious day for Paris Saint-Germain. Bravo, we are all proud. Paris is the capital of Europe tonight."
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo praised the victory, describing it as "historic."
