SpaceX's Starship rocket, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, exploded during a routine test at Starbase in Texas, with no injuries reported, local authorities announced Thursday.
"At 11:01 PM (local time) Wednesday, during a routine test at Starbase, Texas, a SpaceX Starship 36 rocket experienced a catastrophic failure and exploded," the Cameron County Sheriff's Office said on its Facebook page.
"Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far. Emergency measures were quickly taken, and the cause of the incident is under investigation."
SpaceX confirmed in a post on its X platform that "the Starship rocket, which was being prepared for its tenth test, experienced a major anomaly while on a test stand at Starbase." The company added that "a safety zone was in place around the site throughout the operation" and that "all personnel are safe and unharmed." "Our teams at Starbase are working to make the test site and its immediate surroundings safe, in collaboration with local authorities," it added, confirming that "there is no danger to the public."
