Japanese video game giant Nintendo announced Wednesday that it has sold 3.5 million units of its new hybrid Switch 2 console worldwide in just four days after its launch on June 5. "This is a record for Nintendo console sales in the first four days" of its launch, the company said in a statement. Despite its high price, the company expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 units by March 2026, roughly equal to the Switch's sales in its first year on the market. The Switch 2 has seen very high pre-orders, reaching 2.2 million on the Nintendo eShop in Japan alone. This overwhelming demand has led to some pre-orders being temporarily canceled, particularly in the United Kingdom, because The number of devices wasn't enough. Like the original Switch, the Switch 2 is a hybrid console that can be used on the go or connected to a TV, but it features a larger screen, eight times more memory, a built-in microphone, and detachable controllers. New features allow users to chat online and temporarily share gameplay with friends, a feature seen as essential to attract consumers accustomed to watching games live. The Switch 2 is priced at $449.99 in the United States, up from the original's launch price of $299.99. Nintendo hopes to emulate the success of the Switch, which was released in March 2017. More than 152 million Switch units have been sold since its launch, making it the third-best-selling console of all time after Sony's PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS.
