Deezer, the first music platform to warn of AI-generated content

French streaming platform Deezer is now notifying its users when they listen to albums containing songs entirely generated by artificial intelligence (AI), a world first, the music streaming platform's CEO, Alexis Lanternier, told AFP on Friday.

The notification, which appears on albums whose songs are generated from simple, everyday language requests, indicates that "the content is generated by AI. Some of the songs in this album may have been generated using AI."

To identify these songs as "entirely AI-generated," Deezer uses a detection tool developed by the platform that can identify "98% reliable" indicators of AI in a song's vocal frequencies, according to Lanternier.

He said, "Voice frequencies are a very complex amount of information when AI algorithms produce new songs, containing... Small sounds that you recognize and are unique to you... we can detect them. They're not audible to the ear, but they're visible in the audio frequency."

The introduction of this new feature is part of the platform's strategy.

This content is produced via dedicated apps like Suno and Udio.

Lanternier emphasized, "What Deezer seeks is to ensure that the copyrights that should belong to artists are not violated."
