China confirms trade deal with US

China announced on Friday that it had confirmed details of a trade agreement with the United States, indicating that Washington would "lift restrictions" imposed on it while Beijing would "review" goods subject to export controls.

"We hope that the United States and China will meet each other halfway," a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in a statement, stressing the importance of "promoting sound, stable, and sustainable economic and trade relations between China and the United States."

On Thursday, the White House revealed that the two sides had reached an understanding on a number of issues, most notably rare earth export shipments to the United States.

After discussions in Geneva in May, Washington and Beijing agreed to reduce mutual tariffs.

China, for its part, committed to easing some non-tariff countermeasures, but US officials later accused Beijing of violating the agreement and stalling on approving rare earth export licenses.

US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that Washington had "just signed" a trade agreement with China, but without providing further details.

A White House official later told AFP that the United States and China had ratified the agreement reached during previous negotiations between the two countries.

Beijing confirmed on Friday that an agreement had been reached with the United States.

"Following the talks in London, teams from both sides have maintained close communication," a Commerce Ministry spokesperson said.

"Recently, following the agreement, the two sides confirmed the details of the framework," he continued, noting that China "will review and approve export applications for regulated goods if they comply with the law."

The Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson explained that "the US side will, in return, lift a series of restrictions targeting China."
