Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh breaks 400m freestyle world record

Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh broke the world record in the 400m freestyle, clocking a time of 3:54.18 at the Canadian trials for the FINA World Swimming Championships, establishing herself as a strong contender for gold at this year's event in Singapore.

The previous record, 3:55.38, was held by Australian Ariarne Titmus since the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. This achievement marks a strong comeback for the 18-year-old McIntosh, the former world record holder in this event and winner of three Olympic gold medals.

McIntosh will compete in seven events during the trials, including the 800m freestyle, 400m individual medley, 200m freestyle, 200m butterfly, and 200m backstroke, and indicated that she aims to compete for five medals at the upcoming World Championships, which will be held from July 11 to August 3.

McIntosh expected her biggest challenge to come from American Katie Ledecky, given Titmus's absence this season, but she appeared confident after her impressive performance, noting that the crowd's reaction gave her an extra boost during the race's crucial moments.
