XAI partners with Telegram to raise $300 million for messaging service

Telegram has entered into an agreement with xAI to offer its generative AI assistant, Grok, on the messaging platform for one year in exchange for $300 million in cash and stock from the Elon Musk-controlled group.

In addition to this amount, Telegram will also receive half of the revenue generated by xAI's paid subscriptions purchased through its app, company CEO Pavel Durov announced on Wednesday via the X platform.

Durov indicated that Grok will be available on Telegram starting this summer, without providing further details.

Telegram did not immediately respond to a request for comment from AFP.

The terms of the partnership may seem unbalanced, but they allow xAI, which acquired x in late March, and Grok to reach Telegram's vast user base, which Pavel Durov estimated on Wednesday to be more than one billion.

Major companies in the field of generative AI are seeking to accelerate the adoption of their assistant tools to achieve a sufficient number of users and recoup the huge sums invested in their development.

With its launch in November 2023, Grok entered the field late, and is currently lagging behind ChatGPT (from OpenAI) and Gemini (from Google).

Grok is currently available to everyone via X, but with restrictions on users in the free version. The platform offers three paid subscription plans, the most expensive of which costs $40 per month or $395 per year.

Pavel Durov is facing an indictment by French judges on multiple charges related to failure to monitor content posted on Telegram.

He has been placed under judicial supervision pending the completion of the investigation and a possible referral to trial.
