UN: More than 84,000 people affected by floods in Somalia

A United Nations report released Tuesday revealed that more than 84,000 people have been affected by floods in Somalia, which have killed at least 17 people since mid-April.

The Horn of Africa is one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change, with extreme weather events accelerating in frequency and intensity.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a report released Tuesday that "flash floods caused by heavy seasonal rains have killed 17 people and affected more than 84,000 people in several areas since mid-April."

These floods come as non-governmental organizations, often among the first responders, face a funding shortage that is hampering their ability to respond to emergency needs, according to OCHA.

Meteorologists have warned of the possibility of more rains in the coming days in southern and central Somalia, according to the report.

Somalia suffered major floods in 2023, killing more than 100 people and displacing over a million, as a result of heavy rains linked to the El Niño climate phenomenon.
