Hamas Health Ministry..Gaza war death toll rises to 43,799

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said Saturday that at least 43,799 people have been killed in the more than year-long war between Israel and the Palestinian movement.

The toll includes at least 35 people killed in the 24 hours to Saturday morning, the ministry said, adding that 103,601 people have been wounded since the war began.

The war in the Gaza Strip erupted after an attack by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,206 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures that include those who died or were killed while being held captive in the Gaza Strip.

During the attack, 251 people were kidnapped, 97 of whom remain in Gaza, including 34 who the Israeli army says have died.

Since October 6, Israeli forces have also been waging an air and ground offensive on the northern Gaza Strip, particularly in Jabalia, where Hamas says it is seeking to reorganize its ranks.

The Israeli army announced earlier on Saturday that its forces continued their "operational activity" in the northern Gaza Strip, in Jabalia and Beit Lahia. According to the army, "over the past day, the forces continued their work in the Rafah area, where they eliminated a large number of terrorists, dismantled terrorist infrastructure sites and found a large quantity of weapons in the area" in the southern Gaza Strip.
