Denmark's Victoria Kjær wins Miss Universe 2024

A 21-year-old Dane was crowned Miss Universe on Saturday evening, during the beauty pageant held in Mexico and attended by mothers for the first time.

Victoria Kjær, a professional dancer, beat 130 competitors, a record number of participants in the competition previously chaired by Donald Trump.

This 73rd edition was notable for the first time for including contestants with children, with ten mothers taking part, including Beatrice Njoya from Malta, who is 40 and has three children.

In 2023, the competition included married women, overweight women and two transgender women.

Among the favorites of the audience in this 73rd edition of the competition was Iliana Marques from Venezuela, 28, who has a daughter. This teacher, model and TV presenter came in fifth place.

Also among the 12 finalists was Jennifer Colon from Puerto Rico, a 36-year-old mother of three. They also included Lugina Salah, a 34-year-old Egyptian model who suffers from vitiligo, an autoimmune disease.

After being criticized for promoting what were seen as outdated ideas about femininity, the pageant sought to reinvent itself after it was acquired by Thai company JKN Global Group in 2022 by the Thai company JKN Global Group, by opening its doors to categories of women who were previously not allowed to participate.

JKN Global Group, led by transgender businesswoman Anne Jakkapong Jakrajutatip, has since announced in January the sale of a 50% stake to Mexico-based Legacy Holding for $16 million.

The Thai media group bought the popular pageant in October 2022 for $20 million. But the company filed for bankruptcy in Thai courts in November 2023.

In 2023, the pageant was won by Nicaraguan Xinyis Palacios, who has since become a symbol of opposition to President Daniel Ortega.
