In the new Mario Kart game, which will be released with the Switch 2 on Thursday, video game giant Nintendo has added elements that contributed to the success of games like Fortnite.
The main new feature in Mario Kart World is an open world set between snow-covered mountains and picturesque beaches, which can be freely explored by racing car and also serves as a race track between two circuits.
"We wanted to completely change the concept of the game to make it playable in a wider world," said the game's producer, Yabuki Kosuke, in an interview published on the company's website.
He noted that the previous version, Mario Kart 8, "managed to improve on the formula we've followed so far in the series, where players race on single tracks."
This new version, created in 2017 and initially designed for the original Switch, was finally ported to the Switch 2 to take advantage of technological advancements.
In addition to its open world, the game features a "battle royale" mode, where players are eliminated one by one, a concept popularized in games like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone.
The race now includes 24 players, compared to the previous 12, and features day/night rotation, dynamic weather effects (snow, rain, etc.), and increased on-screen obstacles.
The Switch 2 allows players to chat directly. They can also appear in bubbles on the screen if their device is equipped with a camera, which is sold separately.
